Amy McFarland was born April 14, 1980 in Baytown, Texas. She received her B.A. in Psychology and Gender Studies from Rice University in Houston, Texas in 2002. She then worked for a year in Phoenix, Arizona at a residential treatment facility working with individuals dually diagnosed with chemical dependency and serious mental illnesses. It was there that she noticed clients responding to working with plants outdoors with a decrease in reported symptoms. She became interested in people-plant relationships and decided to continue her education with a M.Ed. in Agriculture Education at Texas State University working with Tina Marie (Waliczek) Cade After completing her M.Ed. in 2007, she went on to Texas A&M University to continue her learning in human issues in horticulture under the direction of Dr. Jayne Zajicek.
