Twenty-two Hours

This year's regional convention of the Americn Society for Horticultural Science was held in Greensboro, NC on February 2-5. Seven FHS members and Dr. Lineberger succeeded in traversing the southern U.S. on a 22 hour road trip. Shannon Henke, Mark Krause, Sarah Lineberger, Kim Mason, Doug Maxwell, Wisty Perry, and Melanie Ulrich attempted the journey. Traci Armstrong would fly out the next day, but never make it to Greensboro due to icy conditions.

The surprisingly chipper group left College Station Thursday during what would soon become a winter ice storm. The trip that lay ahead seemed almost comical to the onlooker; many not believing. "Just don't die, " was the most heard phrsase prior to the trip.

Six states and 22 hours later, the party finally reached its destination: Greensboro, NC. After sliding over a final few bridges, the Texas A&M van rolled into the Four Seasons Holiday Inn, site of the 1996 Regional ASHS Conference and ACB Judging Contest.

The conference itself had many high points. Playing in the snow, a variety of challenging games, and many social activities added a high degree of enjoyment to the escapade.

Of course it had it's rocky moments as well, such as surprise dues, hotel blues, and a plethora of illnesses. However, the FHSers made the absolute best of the situation and pulled off an exciting and rewarding weekend culminating in the ACB judging contest. All that would remain would be the return drive home.
